Project Description and Goals:
The project was to model and texture a 3D character. The character was to be sculpted in Zbrush and textured using Polypaint. Furthermore, it needed to accurately represent period imagery found online and have geometry that represented good geometric flow. This flow allows for accurate deformation of the characters limbs while animated. We where given the option to create any model we would like.
I will be sculpting Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the 1886 Scottish novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. My goal will be to differentiate the characters from each other while using the same base. As Mr. Hyde is an alternate personality of Dr. Jekyll, the doctor will serve as the base for the project.
Ideally, I would sculpt Dr. Jeckyll as a disheveled but attractive male. I would rather not represent him as immaculate because the evil urges he attempts to suppress are already within him , before the creation of Mr. Hyde. A truly perfect individual would not have these urges and thus Dr. Jeckyll is not truly perfect.
The portrayal of Mr Hyde will rely on my readings. I will not depict him as feral due to the fact that his is aware of his actions. He is capable of complex thought and thus not as primal as one might initially think. The illegal acts he commit are not what pleasure him; rather, it is committing the acts knowing he shouldn't that gives him pleasure.

Book Research:
Dr. Jeckyll
Temperament:
Calm and aware of his actions as well as their consequences. Dr. Jeckyll is tortured by his vices and seeks to abolish them through science, losing himself in the process.
Moral/ethical/religious beliefs:
Moral and logical Dr. Jeckyll feels guilt and shame for his vices. He is constantly aware of societal expectations and does what he deems best to overcome those challenges.
Much of the rest of his character description will come to light after the book is within my possession.
I will be reading through a re-released edition of the story alongside the production process.
[As of now the book in my possession but will be in the coming days]
For now, below are my literary reference points.
Dr. Henry Jekyll is a "large, well-made, smooth-faced man of fifty with something of a stylish cast", who occasionally feels he is battling between the good and evil within himself, thus leading to the struggle between his dual personalities of Jekyll and Edward Hyde. He has spent a great part of his life trying to repress evil urges that were not fitting for a man of his stature. He creates a serum, or potion, in an attempt to mask this hidden evil within his personality. However, in doing so, Jekyll transforms into Mr. Hyde, a hideous, evil creature without compassion or remorse. Jekyll has many friends and has a friendly personality, but as Hyde, he becomes mysterious and violent. As time goes by, Hyde grows in power. After taking the potion repetitively, he no longer relies upon it to unleash his inner demon i.e., his alter ego. Eventually, Hyde grows to be stronger than Jekyll.
Jekyll, having previously indulged unstated vices (and with it the fear that discovery would lead to his losing his social position) found a way to transform himself and thereby indulge his vices without fear of detection. But Dr. Jekyll's transformed personality Mr. Hyde was effectively a sociopath — evil, self-indulgent, and utterly uncaring to anyone but himself. Initially, Jekyll was able to control the transformations, but eventually he would become Hyde involuntarily in his sleep."
"Dr. Jekyll is described as middle-aged, distinguished-looking, and a large man. Mr. Hyde is younger, more energetic, and described by just about everyone as seeming to have a deformity. No one can pinpoint exactly what this deformity is, but they unanimously agree that it’s there... and that it’s definitely evil."

Online Reference Imagery:
Because Doctor Jeckyll was not overly posh or garish, it would be best to represent him in more modest clothes. He is regarded as stylish and attractive, so his attire will be form fitting and flattering.
Shorter hair with a prominent wave wave more stylish and common among men during the 1800s. Facial hair was also prevalent, but Dr. Jeckyll is described as being clean shaven in the book. If he were to have facial hair it would need to be minimal and well groomed.
Men's clothing also paid attention to accentuating and disguising the ankles. Pants were either cut to drape over the shoe providing a straight-leg silhouette; or, pants for men were cut right below the knee with tassels and ties ti keep it in place.
Dr. Jeckyll was originally a medical doctor but delved more into chemistry over time. For that reason, he could be represented in a lab coat.

Examples of dramatic partitions of the mind:
A visual manifestation of conflicting morality can be seen in the likeness of Harvey Dent (Two-face) from Batman.
Originally an ally to Gotham's Batman, Harvey was scarred with acid by Salvatore Vincent "The Boss" Maroni. The acid dissolved both his appearance and morality, twisting him into the infamous Two-face.

Examples of more subtle partitions of the mind:
A different approach would be to present the character in a subtle; a way in which the audience identifies the differences, but in-world characters would struggle to see them. Minor changes in body language and color sscheme are enough to convey a seeming different character (even if it is the same character in disguise).

Sketch in Photoshop a culmination of the information gathering. Combine the ideas brought about from researching and then provide a thoughtful and effort-filled manifestation of the concepts.

Color Palette:
The color palette will consist of mostly neutral colors that. There will be tones of yellow and blue to provide a more regal feel, but they will e desaturated to reflect the psychological numbness that Dr. Henry Jeckyll is feeling. There will be saturated accents of vibrant greens and red for Mr. Hyde. The saturation levels in the complimentary colors will come across as jarring compared to the muted dominant colors.
(The neon green will only be used for the serum, should Dr. Jeckyll have it on his person).

Additional Work:
Dr. Jeckyll will be the base sculpt and sculpting him will fulfill the project requirements. In addition to sculpting the doctor, I aspire to sculpt Mr. Hyde and a transitional sculpt that could be used to convey the shift in mental state.
The requirements and expectations for these additional sculpts will be identical to those of Dr. Jeckyll and should be able to fit within the scope of the project without issue.
